A spectacular launch. A fragile hero. A real risk. An outdoor spectacle about the irresistible urge to fly.
The Flying Man is an outdoor spectacle that combines contemporary circus, stunt techniques, and the ceremonial atmosphere of classical show tradition.
The work draws inspiration from historical human cannonball acts, but approaches them through the lens of modern safety and contemporary artistic thinking. At the center of the performance is a character striving for momentary heroism and the illusion of flight. The character is simultaneously invincible and fragile, building their identity around risk, visibility, and the fleeting moment. At the moment of launch, the audience experiences the feeling of witnessing something that cannot be undone.
The Flying Man is intended for a broad audience. It offers passers-by a spectacular experience, and for those who look more closely, a reflection on risk, courage, and the limits of the body. The work does not over-explain itself, but simply presents the decision to fly at any cost.
The Flying Man emerges from performer Teemu Skön’s long-standing relationship with danger, the experience of risk, and the extreme limits of the body. Teemu’s artistic motivation is driven by performing stunts and creating spectacle, as well as by a fascination with the moment when a person voluntarily takes great risks and accepts the consequences.
